Preparation: Quad Salchow of Elena Kostyleva

Updated: 3 days ago

During the last competition, Elena Kostyleva jumped four quad salchows. Jumping four quad salchows isn't just about skill; it's about technique. I found it very interesting to detail how she prepares and takes off.

She does a direct forward inside Mohawk—almost a Choctaw. The left arm leads the turn. This detail is crucial. She needs the maximum weight on her left to apply on the ice to get a considerable production force phase.

Her upper body leans forward, which allows her to move up very high with her free leg.

Then, without moving her upper body, she puts her free leg precisely on the side. Like this, there is no change in the Center Of Mass. The time of ice pressure is, on average, 0,525 seconds. This duration starts from the two feet part to the take-off.

At the take-off, Elena uses her knee a lot. This technique is called "Knee-Up," focusing on verticality.

In the video, we only displayed the first of her fourth quad jumps ( Three were successful and one failed).

Here are some data to give a global view.

The first jump's angular velocity of the Snap (w snap) is 28. 95 rad/s and the Flight time (Ft) is 0.601s.

For the second, w snap is 26,966 rad/s and Ft 0,634s.

For the third Sal, the w snap is 26, 966rad/s and Ft 0,633s.

The last and the only fall, Elena's angular velocity is 27,243 rad/s, and the Flight time is 0,667s. She landed with a missing rotation (called "q"). The camera angle was not correct to see the take-off angle, but we can easily deduct from her jump technique and data that Elena's parabolic in the air wasn't effective.
