When Practice Doesn't Equal Competition: The Hidden Danger of Flawed Jump Mechanics

A figure skating girl is ready to jump.

While scrolling online, a side-by-side jump comparison caught my eye: practice versus competition. At home on the training ice, the jump is landed cleanly. Under the lights, it completely unravels.

It is a textbook example of a technique that is not quite optimized. When dozens of tiny mechanical details remain to be ironed out, a skater can get away with it when things are calm. But add the pressure of competition, and that fragile technique turns a solid element into a lucky gamble.

Landing the jump is never the finish line. Once a skater achieves that first success, the real work begins, refining the movement through targeted, specific exercises until the mechanics are bulletproof.
